The Visiting Season has officially begun

Category : Featured Post, What To Do

With the beautiful weather and the arrival of St. Patrick’s Day, the visitor season begins in earnest this week.  Our high temperatures are in the 70s all week.  The weekend will be rollicking with a St. Pat’s parade, the Lo-Tide Run and a host of festivities to mark the day.  Before then we’ll enjoy the more cerebral Pi Day to honor the befuddling math equation, pi are squared. It’s 3.14. That’s also Einstein’s birthday.

From the green beer to higher physics, we’ve got it all along the lower Cape Fear River.  Come on down and Enjoy Wilmington.  Find your adventure at Enjoy Wilmington

Take a Look at our History

From the life of a maid to the power plant of a battleship to the haversack of a Civil War era soldier, our American history is on display this week.

Local Civil Rights leaders and authors Rhonda Bellamy and Bertha Todd read from their new book Meet The Help: An Anthology of True Stories to bring us rare glimpses into the lives of domestic workers.

Propelling a 36,000 ton (that’s 72,000,000 pounds) battleship across the oceans takes a massive power plant.  Saturday’s special four hour Power Plant Tour will take you deep into the ship to look at its turbines, electric generation, water distillation and steering mechanisms with classroom talks and tours.  They warn you to wear washable clothes.

That same practical approach to history carries over to the Cape Fear Museum with its Explore the Civil War program.  From the “bits” in a soldier’s haversack you will be given a rare insight into the life of a soldier in the 1860s.

Friends of Downtown Wilmington will want to head back to the Museum on the 20th for their latest Cape Fear 101 program as they give a historic look at shopping in downtown Wilmy.

Details at Our History.

Enjoy our Art

One of our fun rituals around here is the Fourth Friday Art Walk.  18 galleries, restaurants, bookstores and one dentist office open their doors to show off their art.  Head downtown on the 23rd and you’ll see the people going from show to show. Join in.  And be sure to look for New Elements in its new location on Princess St. at 2nd.  Merrimon began the Gallery Crawl years ago.  Thank her!

While you’re here be sure to check out some of our special art exhibits.  The Cameron Art Museum, our major art museum, has three exhibits running right now.  Poetic Glassworks, The Palomar Mirror and Penland Crafts run through April 1.  And Civil Era Drawings, a new exhibit, runs through May 6.

The Hannah Block Historic USO has two shows, Emerging Artists features a host of artists you will hear more about in the future. And Azalea Festival Children’s Art is kids’ art and an opening event for the Azalea Festival.  Find them all at Wilmington Art.

The Movies…

A classic remake and a film festival highlight things for our movie fans.  Gary Oldman stars as George Smiley in this remake of the Cold War masterpiece, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.  It’s through Wednesday at Thalian.   A Separation, the drama about a marriage breaking up in Iran lights up Thalian next week.  These are both part of the Cinematique series.

The 11th annual Black Film Festival comes to Cameron and Hannah Block next weekend featuring films by African-Americans.  Leading off on Thursday is Dar He.  Mike Wiley plays 36 characters to tell the Emmett Till story.  Till was the young Illinoisan whose vicious murder served as a catalyst for the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

Find all of these and more at The Movies.
