Connect with Professional Peers

Interested in connecting with the area’s young professionals?  Wilmington Young Professionals meet this Thursday at Yosake to enjoy some sushi, exchange business cards and maybe find that next great opportunity.  Jackie welcomes everyone to these events.  You’ll find details at Networking.

Film

Cinematique, our special partnership between WHQR public radio and Thalian Hall Performing Arts Center, is presenting its lineup for 2013.  A Royal Affair is the feature tonight through Thursday.  It’s the true story of royal physician Struenesee and Queen Mathilda working together for an enlightened Denmark.  Imagine that, public leaders working together for a better tomorrow.  Hitchcock is the love story behind famed director Alfred Hitchcock.  It runs the 21st to the 23rdThe Central Park Five rounds out January’s shows.  Details on these and other flicks are at  Our Films.

If you’re in Southport on February 14, then you might want to check out their premiere of Safe Haven.  Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel spent some time here in 2012 filming this movie based on the Nicholas Sparks’ novel of the same name.  Should be fun.  Tickets are $50 and available at the Fort Johnston Garrison House at Davis and Bay.  Wonder why Wilmington doesn’t do this?

Marriage and Fantasy on Stage

The Marriage of Figaro is brought to Kenan Auditorium on the UNCW campus by the Mozart Festival Opera.  It’s the story of characters and their relationships: loyalty, fidelity, trust and love.  Thalian Hall will be presenting the Wilmington premiere of Xanadu.  It’s inspired by the movie of the same name and tells the story of a Greek muse descending from Mt. Olympus to Venus Beach to inspire the creation of the ultimate roller disco.  The full schedule and times can be found at  Our Theater.

Auditions for The Miracle Worker will be held February 2.  Head to the Hannah Block Historic USO and get discovered.

Our Filming venues, ghosts, river sites are all on Tour

We like to show off our history, our natural beauty, our film locations and even our more ‘unique’ side.  Head to the Black Cat Shoppe and they’ll hook you up with Ghost Walk, Haunted Pub Crawls, and Hollywood Location Walk tours.  Head down to Wilmington Water Tours or the Henrietta and they’ll take you out for river cruises to show off a glorious sunset or the key role the river played in our history and the delicate balance between commerce and environmental sensitivity.  Click on  Our Tours  to get started.

We Write Books

And we’re about to celebrate two of them.  Kevin Maurer comes to WHQR tonight to talk about his book “No Easy Day.”  It’s the NY Times best seller about the killing of Osama Bin Laden.  Ben Steelman will interview Kevin before a live audience.  Later this month, Old Books on Front will host Karen Bender as she launches her second book, a follow up her to best seller “Like Normal People.”  Find the details for these events at Our Books

Get Up and Dance

First United Methodist church hosts regular Contra Dances and Arabian Nights Hookah Bar hosts regular Bellydancing.  You can find their schedule at Our Dance.

A Sousance of the Grape

Looking for just the right wine for that upcoming feast?  Maybe you want something to sip with the next romantic movie?  Or maybe a bold cabernet for the steak you’re about to grill would provide the right complement?  Our wine stores want to help you find the grape drink that works for you and they offer free wine tastings to show you what they have.  Find a schedule at Our Fun
